This is your brain.  This is your brain on stress.  Intense experiences that create pain, horror, fear, or helplessness have biological and psychological impact on our brains. Linda Graham is a master’s level Licensed Professional Counselor with Mental Health Service Provider endorsement and is the Board Secretary for CIT Connect.  She has worked in the mental health field for over 35 years with many populations in different settings, including homeless veterans, homeless mentally ill adults, crisis services, substance abuse services, violence reduction programs, community mental health, corrections mental health, and most recently, private practice. She has a long personal and professional involvement with law enforcement, has been part of the TN Public Safety Network since 2002 where she conducted critical incident debriefing, serves on the CIT advisory committee since 2011, and has been a CIT School instructor since 2012.

As increased demand places larger strains on systems in general, the burden has increasingly shifted to those in front-line response. This is especially true when it comes to the care of those in mental health and substance use crisis. With diminishing resources across multiple sectors and a season marked with loss and uncertainty, it's no surprise there are greater numbers of crisis calls than ever before.  The Crisis Intervention Team answers the call, with the mission to preserve dignity and life, and promote safe, effective, and compassionate responses to people experiencing mental health, substance use, or cognitive crisis.
